SolarPower and SolarCity will work together on a one-time, one year research program to evaluate the technology of the solar power system, according to an announcement from the two companies.
SunPower is looking to partner with SolarCity on a research project that will provide a unique insight into the evolution of the sunspot cycle, said SolarPower CEO Greg Jensen in a press release.
SolarCity is looking for companies to conduct a pilot solar project to test out the technology, and then work on an initial commercialized project to validate its value, Jensen said.
The company has a track record of building large-scale projects in the US and Europe that have paid off, Jensen added.
The SunPower and SunCity partnership is in line with Solar’s strategy of working with industry to develop solutions for its customers, said Chris Smith, president and CEO of SunPower.
“The world is moving into a solar era and we are all part of the solution,” Smith said.
“The solar industry is the biggest generator of new clean energy and jobs, but we are also looking to partners to help us bring the best possible solutions to the market.”
Jensen said SunPower has been working with SunPower for years and that the partnership will allow SunPower to focus on innovation and development.
SunPower is also partnering with SunSolar on the SunPower Photovoltaic System, the solar panel technology SunPower developed to help power its panels.
“We are committed to making SunPower’s products better for customers and our shareholders,” Jensen said in the press release announcing the partnership.
“We want to bring together a team of world-class experts to work on innovative technologies that will make solar power more competitive and more sustainable for all.”
